Lexington’s League of Women Voters Chapter celebrated International Women’s Day last weekend by paying tribute to more than 100 women who have contributed to their communities.

The group read the names of women nominated by their peers in front of the city’s downtown STAND monument, which honors the women’s suffrage movement.

Those women’s names are permanently shown on a new display at the Lexington History Museum.

Liza Holland is the President of the League of Women Voters’ Lexington chapter. She said the goal was to uplift all kinds of women across the city.

“It doesn't have to be award-winning level impact,” Holland said. “It can be your next door neighbor that always takes care of you if the kids are sick or anything from small to large.”

She’s also hopeful it will bring more people to the museum and learn about Lexington’s history..

“Not only can families go in and type in the name and see their nominee or the nominator in Lexington history there, but they can also see all the wonderful exhibits and learn more about Lexington history when they're there,” she said.

Holland said she’d like the group to make those readings an annual event, and is asking for donations. In the meantime, people can visit the museum and look for their nominee.
