WEKU suffers major equipment failure, prompting temporary schedule changes

WEKU has experienced a major equipment failure, resulting in temporary schedule adjustments.

On Saturday evening, a power surge from a storm near Richmond damaged a key piece of equipment that WEKU uses to broadcast local programming and provide its daily broadcast schedule of programs to listeners on all 10 of WEKU's broadcast stations, as well as the internet stream and the WEKU App.

As a result of this damage, WEKU has been forced to air live national and international content provided to the station from the Public Radio Satellite System. The changes include around-the-clock broadcast of NPR and BBC News Channels on WEKU and the Classical 24 service on WEKU Classical.

WEKU General Manager Mike Savage says the temporary schedule changes are an emergency measure directly related to the equipment failure. The emergency measures are designed, Savage says, to provide news, information, and arts and cultural content to listeners across 10 broadcast stations and internet streaming.

Savage says the station is working very hard to fix the problem and hopes to return to its normal broadcast schedule as soon as possible.

Questions and concerns about this temporary change can be directed to the station e-mail at weku@eku.edu.

Mike Savage joined WEKU in 2018 as Director & General Manager. He has worked in public radio for 30 years and has managed public radio stations in Georgia, Illinois and Indiana. In his current role as WEKU Director & General Manager, Mike directs station operations, programming, news and fundraising.
