A program through the Attorney General’s office has outfitted 2,000 Kentucky police officers with body armor since it began a year ago.

The announcement is part of the Body Armor Grant Program, which was created by the General Assembly last year. The assembly earmarked $15 million to create the program.

A release from Attorney General Russell Coleman’s office says one in five of Kentucky officers were either wearing an expired vest, or had no vest at all before the program began.

The office plans to expand the program to include shields, helmets and other equipment.
