Former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines, right, was arraigned last week for the murder of District Judge Kevin Mullins.

The attorney for the former Letcher County sheriff accused of fatally shooting a district judge is asking for the murder indictment to be dismissed and a chance for his client to leave jail.

Jeremy Bartley, the attorney for Mickey Stines, has filed motions asking for the case to be dismissed and for a bond hearing for Stines. Stines was indicted for the alleged murder of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins in the judge’s chambers last September, while a surveillance camera recorded the shooting. Bartley claims there was a previously undisclosed meeting between the commonwealth’s attorney’s office and the grand jury.
