People weren’t the only victims of the deadly tornado that roared through southern and southeastern Kentucky a week-and-a-half ago. Pets also lost their homes, and members of the nonprofit Kentucky Mutts Animal Rescue have been working to reunite them and help in other ways. We spoke with Director Vikki Crook after they dropped off a load of pet supplies at the London-Corbin Airport Friday.
“We have food, wishes and collars. We have flea prevention crates, treats, toys, anything you can possibly want for pets -- we have it.”
Crook said they’d found foster homes for 25 dogs at the Laurel County Animal Shelter to make room for those displaced by the tornado. They’d also helped reunite four dogs with their owners.
”We had a young man who was here visiting his grandfather, his grandfather's in the hospital, and his dog survived and got separated from them, and he was ecstatic. I saw tears when the dog was so happy to see his dad.”
Crook said the reunions are like watching a miracle.
