FEMA extends individual assistance deadline for February storm victims

FEMA.gov

FEMA is extending the deadline for February storm victims to apply for assistance.

The last day for storm victims to apply for assistance is now May 25. That deadline was originally scheduled to be the end of this week.

FEMA spokesperson Danny Bernardy says anyone who thinks they might be affected should apply, no matter what.

“Sometimes people will hesitate because they're not sure if something is because of the February floods. Register with us anyway. We'll have somebody take a look at your case,” Bernardy said.

The agency also recently closed disaster recovery centers in Owsley, Estill and Simpson County as recovery continues.

Bernardy says they keep those centers open based on local need, and always discuss those closures with local officials.

“That determination is always made in coordination with the counties,” Bernardy said. “So at the local level and the state level, that determination is made in coordination with them.”

FEMA reports more than $35 million in assistance dollars has been given out to more than 6,000 households. Those still in need of assistance can apply at Kentucky’s disaster recovery centers, by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362, going online or downloading the mobile app.
