Kentucky’s power co-op association says it could take a few days before power is fully restored to certain communities following Sunday’s winter storms.
Utility tracker PowerOutage.us says more than 50,000 customers are still without power as of 5 p.m. Monday evening.
Kentucky Electric Cooperatives spokesperson Joe Arnold says crews statewide have been working against ice accumulation and high winds, which can slow restoration times.
“Frankly, I would expect more outages to continue to increase even as power is restored, because of what I mentioned before about the ice still sagging on those lines and the cumulative effect of that weight being on there for a number of days,” Arnold said.
Arnold says many member co-ops work in more remote communities, which can also affect recovery times.
“Even on a blue sky day where everything is perfect, we still have areas that are difficult to access because of the fact that we’re the most rural, the most remote places to serve,” Arnold said.
Those still experiencing outages can check with their local utility to see if there’s an estimate on when power will be restored.
