Utility bills can get more costly during the winter months.

LG&E and KU spokesperson Drew Gardner says to reach out to an HVAC technician to make sure it’s running efficiently, and to frequently check its air filter.

It’s also recommended to check for leaks in doors and windows, and to keep the blinds open during the day to let extra sun in.

It’s also important to frequently check your thermostat, which can have a huge impact on utility bills.

“If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, this is a good time to think about installing one. Now with smart technologies, it is easier than ever to manage your home’s energy usage,” Gardner said.

Gardner also recommends those in danger of getting disconnected to reach out.

“We can get you on a payment plan that will avoid the disconnection and the fees that come along with that,” Gardner said. “So if you think you might be running into some trouble, of course check for the assistance programs and then reach out to us about setting up a payment plan.”

Those struggling with high utility bills can reach out to their local Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program office for assistance.
