State Auditor To Examine Kentucky Tornado, Flooding Relief Funds

newslocker.com

The state auditor’s office is conducting a special examination of how disaster relief funds were administered by the state’s Public Protection Cabinet.

This comes during the middle of a gubernatorial race between the Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear and Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron.

The examination was announced by the auditor’s office Thursday. It’s reviewing how two relief funds for Western Kentucky tornadoes and Eastern Kentucky flooding were managed from Dec. 11, 2021 through the end of last month.

This comes after a letter was sent to the office by the Republican-led Legislative Oversight and Investigations Committee requesting the review.

The state legislature passed a law requiring legislative oversight for relief funds last February following reports that more than 200 checks from the funds were sent to people who did not request them.

Beshear defended the funds as transparent and that the review’s timing was “grossly political” during his regular media briefing Thursday. He previously pointed out the misdirected funds as data errors.

There is no set date on when the examination will be completed.
