When Letcher County public school classrooms empty at the end of the school year, the federally-funded summer feeding service program will begin.

Letcher County is one of many in eastern Kentucky still recovering from last July’s floods. When school lets out, the Letcher school district’s federally-funded summer feeding service program for people 18 years old and under will work a little differently this year. Nancy Banks is the district’s food service director.

“They've made some changes. And we can no longer have pickup meals and feed students at the same site.”

Banks said free meals will be offered at five sites around the county. Meanwhile, she and most school district staffers are still working in the bus garage.

“Well, everybody's just learned from work, work in close quarters. I mean, we like some of the rooms have six, seven people in there. Some people work with headphones.”

Banks said the summer feeding service program will begin at Letcher Central High School the week after school lets out.
