Kentucky Power has taken the unusual step of asking residents to conserve electricity the day before Christmas.

According to a company press release, Kentucky Power said, "extremely cold temperatures across the region have created extraordinary demands on the power system."

The utility is asking Kentuckians to cut electricity use "as much as possible" through 10 a.m. Sunday, Christmas Day.

The request is being made in coordination with PJM, the area's regional power grid operator.

If electricity usage does not decrease enough, Kentucky Power says brief and intermittent power outages would be implemented.

The utility says this action would only be taken to "avoid widespread power loss and prevent long-term damage to the regional electric system."
