The Kentucky Racing Commission has awarded a license to build a quarter horse racing track in northeast Kentucky. It amounts to a re-introduction of this form of racing.
Revolutionary Racing plans to build a quarter horse “sprint racing” track and historical horse racing betting facility in Ashland. Governor Beshear says it’s a $55 million investment and will mean 200 jobs.
Quarter horse racing has deep roots in the Commonwealth dating back to Daniel Boone days. A historical marker near Lexington indicates in 1780 pioneers established the starting point of the first race path that extends southward one quarter mile. It has been three decades since quarter horse racing occurred in Kentucky.
The construction project, which includes the sprint racetrack and two racing barns, is expected to be completed in 2024.
