Officials with the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security say they are seeing an uptick in requests for terrorism related workshops. Public Information Officer Martin Riggs says there have been three requests for active shooter workshops since the San Bernardino mass shooting last Wednesday that claimed 14 lives. “We’ve also been in constant contact with our liaison to the department, the federal department for homeland security, and that’s ongoing all the time to keep updated with trends and current trends,” said Riggs.
Riggs says in a typical year there are about a dozen requests from schools and small businesses for terrorism workshops. Riggs says terrorists seek disruption and he says it’s important to maintain normal daily activities. “And that’s what the terrorists want,” added Riggs. “They want to change your lifestyle and we always provide the advice of, you know, go about your daily business.”
Riggs says the Kentucky office promotes the ‘See Something - Say Something’ campaign designed by the federal Department of Homeland Security. The commonwealth also has a statewide hotline set up to accept tips about possible terrorist activity. The ‘Eye on Kentucky’ hotline is 866-393-6659.?
