The Kentucky attorney general’s office is suing automaker Volkswagen in connection with rigged emissions software. Andy Beshear made the announcement Tuesday. The suit claims Volkswagen and its associated brands - Audi and Porsche -willfully violated Kentucky’s Consumer Protection Act when the company claimed its diesel engine cars had ‘clean diesel’ technology.
Beshear says almost 3,800 affected vehicles are registered in Kentucky. He says car owners deserve some form of compensation. “They should potentially have the opportunity to trade back in their car and to reverse that deal; that would leave them the option of purchasing a new and different car,” Beshear said. “But, the deception that’s at issue here is Volkswagen can’t give them a clean diesel car, because they only way they got there was creating a cheat device.”
Beshear says civil penalties from the suit could amount to millions of dollars. In addition to restitution, the lawsuit also seeks an injunction barring the automaker from any similar activities in the future.
Beshear says the suit pertains to vehicles dating back to 2005.
