GOP To Rally; Legg Seeks Recanvass

In the wake of Tuesday’s primary election, Kentucky Republicans, including Senate President David Williams, will hold a unity rally Saturday at state GOP headquarters in Frankfort.  But the man Williams faces in the fall is already trying to spoil the party.

Sen. Williams grabbed the Republican gubernatorial nomination Tuesday and will be a key speaker at the GOP rally.  Other Republican nominees for state constitutional offices will also say a few words.

But Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear is already trying to dampen GOP spirits by announcing Republican support for his re-election bid.

The Beshear campaign has released the names of 70 prominent Republicans supporting Beshear in the fall, and says more names are on the way.

Among those on the list are former Jefferson County GOP Chairman Jon Ackerson, former Lt. Gov. Steve Pence, the mayors of Lebanon, Harrodsburg, Bardwell and Versailles and Lexington businessman Michael Scanlon.

Gov. Beshear had no Democratic primary opposition on Tuesday.

GOP'S HILDA LEGG SEEKS RECANVASS

Former federal administrator Hilda Legg of Somerset has officially requested a recanvass of the vote in the Republican primary for Kentucky Secretary of State.

On Tuesday, Legg lost the primary by just over 1,100 votes to tea party favorite Bill Johnson of Elkton.  The unofficial vote tally was 66,439 for Johnson, to Legg's 65,325.

Legg's letter requesting a recanvass of the vote has been received by Secretary of State Elaine Walker, who is notifying county clerks to conduct the recanvass on the morning of Thursday, May 26th.

A recanvass involves re-checking voting machine totals, to make sure no math or human errors occurred on election night.  It is not the same as a recount, which must be ordered by a judge, is expensive and has to be funded by the requesting candidate.
