Kentucky Food Banks Seeing Higher Demand

The director of Kentucky’s umbrella food assistance organization says food banks across the state are struggling with increased need from many people who have lost wages.  Feed Kentucky’s Tamara  Sandberg said some areas of the Commonwealth are seeing a 50% increase in demand compared to two weeks ago.

Sandberg noted financial donations are the best way to help.  She added contributions split up among several people, can aid hard pressed areas. “A donation of a thousand dollars whether from one source or a hundred, would let a regional food bank fill up a truck of pre-packed food boxes and drive it into a community that is not being served right now,” said Sandberg.

Sandberg said the lack of service could be because there was an existing weakness in distribution or charitable organizations don’t have enough volunteers to operate.

The Feed Kentucky administrator said the national food bank network has offered to send large boxes of product if a location can be provided along with people to pack items.  Sandberg noted officials in the state agriculture department are in search of such a facility now.?
