Kentuckians Tuesday cast ballots for candidates running for several statewide constitutional offices.
The vote will determine who holds five state offiices but much of the attention this fall has focused on the governor’s race between incumbent Matt Bevin and Attorney General challenger Andy Beshear.
Voter turnout is considered important in determining a winner, especially in tight races. Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes predicted turnout to hover around 30%. Voters Bill and Jan Carrico and Karen Cole cast ballots at one of four voting machines in First Alliance Church in Lexington.
“I’m not a straight ticket person. I really wish they didn’t have that listed even. I think you need to think about your voting,” said Bill Carrico.
While the crowd was significant as the pair cast their ballots Jan Carrico was skeptical that it would continue.
“I really didn’t expect honestly even though it’s a tight race to see this turnout flowing throughout the day,” she said.
“One thing I thought was interesting was that there was such a national focus in Kentucky. I don’t know that I had seen that before,” noted Cole.
Roger and Katheryn Kidwell also voted at the church, continuing a long tradition of civic participation.
“We vote every time there is an election. How many elections?...I’m 85 and she’s 84. So, we haven’t missed a one I don’t think,” said Roger Kidwell.
Polls in Kentucky close at 6 p.m. today.
