Do surface mines and mountaintop removal sites worsen flooding in Eastern Kentucky coalfield communities? The question is the focus of Episode Ten of RISE, the Eastern Standard documentary series. The hour features an extensive conversation with veteran environmental mining engineer and mine safety inspector Jack Spadaro, Mary Cromer and Rebecca Shelton of the Appalachian Citizens Law Center, and the voices of those who survived the catastrophic flood of July, 2022 and are now raising difficult, uncomfortable questions.

Tom Martin hosts Eastern Standard, a weekly radio magazine of interviews and stories about interesting people, places, and things happening in the Commonwealth.
