Eastern Kentucky University Furloughs 60 Employees

EKU

Eastern Kentucky University announced the furlough of 60 employees on Monday. EKU is ending the fiscal year with a seven-million-dollar shortfall. University officials pointed to lost revenue from housing and dining services, closing facilities and canceling events.

EKU Interim President David McFaddin said the university is adjusting to the new normal.

“We felt it was prudent to take a look at those positions that were most impacted by our new operating protocol and, and try to find some cost savings associated with that,” said Dr. McFaddin.

The employees are furloughed for three months beginning May 1.

“This is impactful for those 60 positions and the 60 individuals and we're very, very thoughtful about how we manage the next few months so that we're able to get back to business and be able to have those employees returned to campus and get back to work,” said McFaddin.

The university is helping employees apply for unemployment and is giving them the option to retain benefits.
