A recent football game between Frederick Douglass and Bryan Station high schools in Fayette County was disturbed when students shouted that someone had a gun. Thursday, school officials announced steps to keep something like that from happening again.
High school principals from across the Fayette County Public School district have agreed to some new guidelines for evening athletic events.
“We feel like that's going to have a big impact. And, and hopefully the people come into our games to root on the student athletes will notice the changes and, you know, hopefully we'll get some positive comments,” said Chief of High Schools, James McMillin.
Football kick-off times in games between Fayette County schools will be moved back an hour to 7:30 p.m. and students not old enough to attend high school must now be accompanied by an adult.
Also, outside food and drinks will not be allowed at games and students won’t be able to bring in backpacks or large bags.
McMillin said many of the rules were already in place in some schools. These guidelines will make them uniform throughout the district and keep focus where it should be.
“Football games, basketball games, choir events, plays, the focus should be on the kids.”
The policies will take effect this week and, McMillin said, fully enforced from the beginning.
