Eastern Kentucky University's Director of Public Safety Brian Makinen said it’s difficult to say just how big the crowds may become as thousands flock to Richmond Saturday to hear President Donald J. Trump.
But he urged people to allow plenty of time to make their way to Alumni Coliseum where the president will speak.
“We need folks to be patient as they are making their way around the Richmond area and be understanding that we will have many, many visitors who are not familiar with our areas, who are not familiar to how to get around,” he said. He suggested people concentrate on “being helpful, being mindful and being patient.”
An extensive plan has been put together by groups across Madison County. Makinen said the Richmond public safety community has a history of working together because of frequent drills to prepare for an unlikely chemical weapons leak at the Bluegrass Army Depot.
“The blessing that we have in this community is with our emergency response agencies in this area we come together continuously, largely because of the chemical stockpile program,” he said.
Makinen said there will be a specific area for protestors or others wanting to exercise their First Amendment rights. But the groups must register to participate in that area.
“If there are groups who desire to set up a location to say protest, they are certainly welcome to do so,"

The website also features detailed information about parking, what is allowed in the venue and other information of use to rally-goers.
The rally begins at 7 p.m. Doors open to ticket holders at 4 p.m.
