The 18-year-old charged with shooting and killing two bank workers in Berea last week made his first appearance in court on Monday.
Brailen Weaver appeared briefly Monday afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
He faces federal charges in the shooting deaths of two people at the U.S. Bank branch in Berea last Thursday.
Weaver was advised of his constitutional rights, the nature of the charges and possible penalties. The federal crimes he’s charged with carry the possibility of a death sentence or life in prison.
Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said last week he’d bring state murder charges against Weaver.
Magistrate Judge Matthew Stinnett set a preliminary hearing for May 12 in Lexington.
Weaver was listed late Monday as an inmate at the Woodford County Detention Center, where he was booked after 3 p.m. He is also listed as a resident of Somerset. There had been some confusion previously about where Weaver lived.
Breanna Edwards, 35, of Madison County, and Brian Switzer, 42, were killed at the bank.
As of Monday evening, a GoFundMe for Edwards had raised more than $24,000, and one for Switzer had raised more than $66,000.
