Lexington police union sues city over officer suspension

The Fraternal Order of Police Bluegrass Lodge No. 4 filed a lawsuit in Fayette Circuit Court on behalf of an unnamed officer earlier this week.

According to court filings, the union claims the Lexington Police Department unjustly restricted the officer without properly investigating an allegation from a city resident.

The court filing doesn’t specify what the allegation involves. The unnamed officer was placed on Level 3 Administrative Assignment in response, one of the harshest punishments the department can give.

That includes being stripped of authority and the ability to carry a firearm off duty. It also restricts overtime and strips them of their badge, credentials, uniform and access to vehicles.

The union says no written reason was given for the restriction.

The filing also says the officer was later contacted by the department for an interview without a reason given. Emails between the union and the police department state the officer was being interviewed about, quote, the “same topics the FBI discussed with him.”
