The Lexington Theatre Company has a permanent home, thanks to a $2 million dollar gift from the James A. and Martha R. Brown Charitable Foundation. Lyndy Franklin Smith is the artistic director and with her husband Jeromy, co-founded the group 10 years ago. She called the donation “transformational.”

“This gift is enabling us to purchase our property here at 2323 Alexandria drive 14 years ahead of schedule. We were in a lease to own agreement, and so this is just opening up so many new opportunities for our team to grow,” she said.

Franklin Smith, a Lexington native, said The Lex, as they are known, is also a training ground for aspiring performers as young as three years old.

“We have folks who are beginners all the way to our season professionals who take classes with us, just to keep their chops up. And so we really try to make sure that. That theater can be accessible to everyone,” she said.

Franklin Smith said the donation will also allow The Lex to renovate their 120-seat Alex Theatre earlier than planned.

John McGary is a Lexington native and Navy veteran with three decades of radio, television and newspaper experience.
