The annual Kentucky River Clean Sweep that scheduled this Saturday has been postponed. Officials made the call Thursday afternoon, due to high water in the Kentucky River.

Volunteers would have gone out in boats on the Kentucky River to collect trash from the twelve miles of river that borders Fayette County.

Jennifer Myatt is an environmental initiative specialist with the city of Lexington. She said they clean up a lot of garbage.

“We usually collect about one ton, maybe one to two thousand pounds of trash per year. It's a really fun event to get people from Lexington that might not normally get to go out on the river down there to see what it's like, and we get to clean up the environment while it's happening.”

She said this event has been going on for a long time.

“It's a good event, we've been doing it for over 25 years, and we have a lot of new volunteers every year.”

River Sweep participants who pre-registered online have been notified. A new date for River Sweep will be announced in early July. At that time, a new registration link will be posted to the Lexington River Sweep website.
