Lexington’s High Street will be seeing some roadway changes as part of a city pilot project meant to help improve safety for its pedestrians.
Traffic engineers plan to reduce traffic to one lane, adding a bike lane and creating 36 more parking spots from Woodland Avenue to Rose Street.
The Division of Traffic Engineering is using the project to gather data on speeding and collisions, alongside pedestrian and cyclist use.
David Filiatreau is Lexington’s Traffic Engineering Manager. He says the project is part of the city’s Complete Streets policy, which was created to make Lexington’s roadways safer.
“We're accommodating both bikes, vehicular traffic and a comfortable pedestrian environment. All three things are important to really bring together an infrastructure that accommodates everyone,” Filiatreau said.
Filiatreau says the project is the first of many that will research city traffic.
“There's been some points, but really, I think this is more of the declaration, or the starting point of where we're making real changes as part of that policy,” he said.
The change will be set up through the first week of June. Filiatreau says the change could be permanent depending on the project’s results.
