The City of Richmond's public works director says this winter, road crews have gone through about 1,850 tons of road salt — more than two-and-a-half times the average of the last four or five years.

A flurry of snowstorms has meant a lot more salting and plowing for city and county road crews. Josh Farthing is the director of Public Works for the City of Richmond. He said the previous four or five winters, they used an average of 600 to 700 tons. He said this year; they’ve gone through that more than two-and-a-half times.

“We went through about 1,850 tons this year, which we got lucky -- we just got replenished about 300 tons today. So we know we're ready for another storm.”

Farthing said his crew of a dozen salts and plows about 300 miles of city roads – and there’s been a lot more salting and plowing this winter.

“We got 12 guys that go round and round to get their own trucks, and we try to keep it every six to eight hours gathered, truck, take breaks, and if we have to, we were out early people as they go, where they take little naps.”

Farthing says the city has seven salt storage facilities.
