A proposal to build a soccer complex and stadium off Newtown Pike in Lexington is drawing significant opposition from horse interests.
Last month, Fayette County Board of Adjustment action advanced plans by Lexington Sporting Club to build 12 soccer fields and 750 parking spaces. This Thursday, the business group will be back asking the Planning Commission for its backing of a plan to build a stadium in the same area.
But, a letter endorsed by more than 30 groups, which includes well over a dozen horse farms, Keeneland, and Fasig-Tipton, asks the Commission to oppose the zoning ordinance text amendments. The letter states that allowing the commercial development would upset the balance between urban and rural development.
Those signing on to the letter say they support bringing a professional soccer team to Lexington and additional youth soccer opportunities, just not at this site.
