The newest member of Lexington’s city council has been sworn in to office. The socially distanced ceremony took place Monday morning at city hall.
University of Kentucky Public Health Professor Mark Swanson is the new third district councilman. “This would be an awesome responsibility and a great honor under any circumstances. But, completing the term of my friend Jake Gibbs makes it even more important to me that I do my very best in this role, striving to follow the example of integrity and compassion he so richly embodied,” said Swanson.
Former Council Member Jake Gibbs died unexpectedly on March third. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton admitted it’s an odd time to be sworn in as a council member. “Not only is he coming in in the middle of a global pandemic, but he’s coming in right in the middle of our budget discussions, so he’s up to the challenge though,” explained Gorton.
Mayor Gorton is scheduled to deliver her budget speech to council on April 28th. The next council work session, conducted remotely through video conference, is set for April 21st.?
