Lexington council members reviewed the operations of the Lextran mass transit system Tuesday at City Hall.
During the weekly council work session there were questions about bus routes and scheduling.
Lextran General Manager Carrie Butler detailed the budget for the 67-bus fleet including all-electric and compressed natural gas vehicles.
Council Member Kevin Stinnett questioned whether more could be done to improve frequency of stops including more grid-type routing. “It’s said we have to stay on a spoke. I don’t know that though. I mean, there are certain routes I know you could go every 15 minutes easily or 30 and have enough traffic,” said Stinnett.
Butler agrees that the issue deserves attention. She says some public transit systems have incorporated more circulator shuttle type bus services. “We are in a good place with the new facility to dig in and look back at route structure and bus stop improvements and facility improvements as well,” responded Butler.
A little more than a year ago, Lextran relocated to new headquarters on Louden Avenue.
Butler says, during that year, just under 4 million mass transit trips were logged.
