County Clerks Issue Marriage Licenses to Gay Couples

By mid-afternoon Friday, Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins says about 10 gay couples had visited his office seeking marriage license applications.

The requests came following Friday's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for gay and lesbian couples to marry in every state.  Blevins says the transition is going well.  He says things fell into place "once the various decisions were made about what we could and couldn't do and how to get the forms printed and just sort of the practical procedural side."  Blevins says the licenses for same sex couple are nearly identical to the traditional forms.

In Madison County, Clerk Kenny Barger says his office is making modifications to its existing forms.  He anticipates increased activity the first of next week as gay couples come in seeking the marriage license applications.  "I'm sure there are folks who have wanted to live here and wanted to get married in Kentucky and not another state and were probably anticipating this ruling too," said Barger. "I expect to be busy Monday."

Barger says the clerk's office just began issuing marriage licenses out of its Berea office on June 1.  He anticipates some of the first requests for marriage licenses from gay couples to come from Berea, based on previous inquiries to that office.?
