Council Member Chris Ford Confirmed as New Social Services Commissioner

kentucky.com

Incoming Lexington Social Services Commissioner Chris Ford says the goal in his new position is to excel in existing programs, while further expanding in areas like drug abuse and violence intervention.  Ford is giving up his seat on the Lexington Council to serve in the position.

The first district representative says a number of non-government agencies play a big role in addressing social needs.  "We're gonna rely on the community, the network of non-profits that already do work on the ground level, day-in and day-out,” said Ford. “We have good support from the Council and Mayor Gray and his administration.  So, it's a lot of work to be done, but we stand ready to the challenge."

A confirmation hearing for Ford was held Tuesday before his fellow council members.   Ford starts his new responsibilities Monday.   He says attention given to family, youth, and aging services will continue along with expansion efforts.  "And then we're also going to expand upon the initiatives that the council and administration have already identified with substance abuse and violence intervention,” he said. “Of course with our long history of domestic violence intervention, and then also multi-cultural and international affairs."

He credits retired Social Services Commissioner Beth Mills, who left the job in February, with rebuilding and stabilizing the department.
