Breaking The Bronze Ceiling Statue Awaits Formal Unveiling

Stu Johnson

The installation of Lexington’s new Breaking the Bronze Ceiling statue took place Thursday morning.

It’s the culmination of an idea brought forth by longtime city council member Jennifer Mossotti.

The five 20 foot tall metal figures representing suffragists are positioned at the corner of Vine and Mill Streets.  More than two years in the making, Mossotti said Lexington has been without a statue to recognize women and their accomplishments. “You know we have statues of the Virgin Mary.  We have statues of Mother Goose.  We have a lot of horses.  We have a camel, but nothing really that signifies any contributions for women,” said Mossotti.

The piece of art by Barbara Grygutis in Arizona commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote.

Mossotti noted lighting, landscaping, granite, and a plaque will still be installed before the official virtual ceremony on August 18th.   Fundraising efforts to pay for the 500-thousand dollar cost are ongoing.
