Governor Beshear Says Coronavirus Cases Surging In Commonwealth

Governor Beshear has been saying the next couple of weeks are critical in trying to slow the spread of the coronavirus.  During his Sunday afternoon briefing, the governor said the state is now experiencing the surge of cases that was predicted to happen.  He reported 45 new cases yesterday compared to 92 the day before.

There have been reports of coronavirus remaining viable in the air for up to three hours.  Beshear noted that would not be likely in a typical common area. “This would be an area like a healthcare facility with a number of folks that are infected or a small room with someone significantly infected.  We’re not talking about being outside.  We’re not talking about larger buildings,” said Beshear.

Beshear said studies continue to show the primary spread of COVID 19 is through droplets with a cough or sneeze.   Both Beshear and State Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack stressed the importance of adhering to social distancing.  Stack used the analogy of encountering COVID 19 positive individuals each day.  “Just assume that the people that you are seeing on the street, the people you’re sitting next to somewhere have the coronavirus.  If you keep that six to ten feet between you, and you keep the social distancing, you’re going to be ok,” explained Stack.

Governor Beshear said there about 15 to 16 labs across Kentucky conducting coronavirus testing now.  The governor and Dr. Stack continue to emphasize that it’s critical that people stay separated over the next two weeks.  The governor said steps could be taken to shut down golf courses across the Commonwealth.
