A Community Action Council official with senior management experience in the agency’s child development program has been named executive director. Sharon Price officially began her duties Monday.
Federal funding for five head start programs account for almost 70% of Community Action’s budget. In the near term, Price said funding appears stable. “Right now we’re feeling pretty good about the funding that we have, but you know it’s something that we always watch and something that we continually want to grow that and especially around the realm of unrestricted dollars, so that we can provide the programming that is specific and needed in each one of our counties,” explained Price.
Services are offered in a number of areas including education, job training and employment, and housing and homelessness. Price said community action is making efforts to quickly train and license commercial drivers. ?“If you have that license, you could be making 18 dollars an hour. We know we’re hiring for bus drivers, Fayette County Public Schools is hiring for bus drivers and so is the city of Lexington. So, what we’re doing is we’re helping families get in a situation immediately and making a decent wage at it,” said Price.
The core counties for Community Action Council are Fayette, Bourbon, Harrison, Nicholas, and Scott. The non-profit poverty fighting agency serves more than 20,000 people each year in central Kentucky.
