Seat Belt Enforcement Effort Extends Beyond Memorial Day Holiday

lexingtonky.gov

Memorial Day might be over, but the emphasis on safe driving in Kentucky continues.  In fact, the annual Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign runs through June 2.

Prior to the passage of a primary enforcement seat belt law in 2006, Kentucky's seat belt usage was 67%.  By 2018, the comparable rate was almost 90%.  But Kentucky Office of Highway Safety Spokeswoman Erin Eggen said many pickup truck drivers still don’t buckle up. “Our pickup truck drivers and passengers only have an 80.6% usage rate and compared to passenger car occupants, they have a 92.1% usage rate.  So, we really have a lot of work to do with our pickup truck drivers and passengers,” noted Eggen.

Eggen said increasing seat belt usage comes through enforcement and awareness.   She said education programs have helped to instill the habit of clicking a seat belt in young people.
