More than 96,000 homes are still without power. On Wednesday, Gov. Beshear said the power grid in eastern Kentucky has been damaged by the storms. He expects some residents will have power by the end of the week, but for others, it will take longer.
On Tuesday, Beshear spoke to President Biden about winter storm damage and the impacts from COVID-19. Beshear says eastern Kentucky has been hit hard.
“We see it being hard for the utility company to repair aged infrastructure and hard for residents to afford their electricity," Beshear said. "And it creates this spiral that that the infrastructure gets older and older as people pay more and more.”
On Wednesday, Beshear also asked that people limit travel. However, regardless of the winter weather, regional COVID-19 vaccination centers will be open on Thursday. Beshear says it is possible for people to reschedule appointments.
“So if we use that option, then those that can get there safely, we want to go ahead and get vaccinated,” Beshear said. “So let me tell everybody, if it's too dangerous for you, if you look outside and the road that you live on is in bad shape, it's okay to reschedule.”
Multiple rounds of sleet, snow and freezing rain are predicted for much of the state beginning Wednesday night and lasting into early Friday morning.
