Lexington Piloting Paper Recycling At City Hall

Lexington city officials are launching an in-house paper recycling pilot project, with hopes it may have implications for citywide recycling.  The city suspended door-to-door recycling of paper in May because the recycling center didn’t have a reliable outlet to take it.  Under the pilot program employees will set aside clean, dry paper in bins throughout city hall.

Environmental Quality and Public Works Commissioner Nancy Albright said if it is successful the program may help re-establishing paper recycling but door-to-door collection may not be in the offing.

“Not sure if we will get to a point where we will have it curbside.  We’ll just have to see again what the demand is of if we’ll have drop off locations around the city.  I know that’s not everybody’s favorite outcome, so we’re just trying to see what the demands are, either way,” said Albright.

Albright added city officials will evaluate how the city hall pilot program does over the next month or so and then see about moving to other government buildings and possibly the entire community.
