Kentucky River's Catfish Population Grows By Thousands

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has made a good “catch.”   The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources donated 15,000 blue catfish, which have been placed into pools two through six on the Kentucky River. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources Spokesman Kevin Kelly says it could help to build up blue catfish stock long term.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources Spokesperson Kevin Kelly said it could help to build up blue catfish stock long-term.

“That’s part of the thinking here yes, that hopefully we’ll see some reproduction out of these fish and continued growth to trophy sizes and sizes that  really tug on your line and give your heart a thrill if you hook one,” said Kelly.

According to the news release, earlier this year Arkansas donated 38,000 surplus cutthroat trout to Kentucky.  That enabled the state to stock this species for the first time ever in the Cumberland River below Lake Cumberland.
