Phase One Of In-Class Instruction In Lexington Public Schools Planned Monday

Fayette County Public Schools

Fayette County Public Schools’ educators are planning on welcoming kindergartners, first graders and second graders to class Monday, February 22nd

Acting Schools Superintendent Marlene Helm said first COVID-19 and then the weather caused delays.  During a virtual news conference Wednesday Helm says the aim is to see all k-12 students in-person this school year. “We have every intention, good intention, honest intention, of bringing back every student,” said Helm.

One of the biggest challenges currently is finding enough school bus drivers.  There are 34 driver vacancies.  The schedule calls for k-2 grades to come back next week with third through fifth graders added on March 3rd.   Helm says a definite timeline for other grades can’t be made right now.  Helm says virtual learning will be an option for all students for the remainder of the year.

Chief of High Schools James McMillin was asked about any plans for seniors Right of Passage.  He said graduation dates have been scheduled in Rupp Arena this spring.  “To be honest I’m hoping that as we get closer the capacity will increase.  At last meeting with the Rupp Arena organizers, we had about 15%, I think they’re at about 15% capacity so we’re hoping that that will increase.  But, that is on the books,” said McMillin.

McMillin said there are also discussions about creative ways to hold senior proms this year.
