EKU Spring Semester Begins With Coronavirus Testing And Vaccinations Included

Eastern Kentucky University

A number of Kentucky public universities’ spring semesters begin this week.  The first day of class came Tuesday for four schools including Eastern Kentucky University.

Thousands of EKU students are back on campus and still being asked to adhere to coronavirus preventive measures of mask wearing, social distancing, washing hands, and staying in when sick.  EKU Vice President of Public Safety Bryan Makinen says just under 800 academic offerings are in-person. “About 20%, a little over 20% of our classes are still on the traditional format, although all of our classroom spaces have been designed so that they are socially distanced within that classroom environment,” said Makinen.

Makinen said returning students can participate in voluntary coronavirus testing through this Friday.  The Eastern vice president says it’s still too soon to predict the timing of vaccinations for the general student body population.  In addition to Eastern, Murray, Morehead, and Western students all started back Tuesday.
