Officials At Model Lab School Told To Develop A New Financing Plan

Stu Johnson

Administrators at Model Laboratory School are being asked to develop a new financing method.  The urging comes from State Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis.

The state’s only lab school on the Eastern Kentucky University campus is partly supported through tuition.  Lewis said that requirement makes Model in-eligible for state education funding through the SEEK program. “Essentially what you have is a private school that’s being subsidized by common school, ie- public school funds.  And neither the Kentucky constitution nor statute allows for that,” said Lewis.

Lewis admits it’s a practice that’s been in place at Model for years.  Lab school officials are being asked to implement a new financing plan for next school year.  Lewis said one possibility would be a legislative fix.  The education commission says that could involve a direct funding appropriation by the state general assembly.  A community meeting is scheduled Thursday night at 6:45 at Model.?
