Latino Students At EKU Hold "Unity Rally"

Stu Johnson

Latino students at Eastern Kentucky University led what they called a “unity rally” this afternoon on the Richmond campus.

About 200 people made their way through campus, just two days before President Trump comes to EKU for a Saturday night rally.  Senior Alex Ortiz believes the administration should focus more heavily on school violence prevention. “You see me, I’m right here in school, I’m brown.  You see more students here at school.  We’re not criminals, we’re not rapist, we’re not drug dealers.  We’re right here getting an education,” said Ortiz.

Latino Student Association Faculty Advisor Socorro Zaragoza says there are almost 500 latino students on EKU’s campus and that number is rising.

Zaragoza says students want to create a welcoming community, but there is some anxiety about this weekend’s event.?
