Model Laboratory School in Richmond will, for now, be staying as is. Eastern Kentucky University officials had considered becoming a charter school as a way to help fund construction of a new facility.
But, state lawmakers did not include funding for charters in the recently passed budget. EKU Vice President of Engagement, Regional Stewardship, and Government Relations David McFaddin says Model will continue to build on its reputation for high academic scores. “We continue to have meaningful conversations with Madison County schools and others to think about how we might best think about replacing that facility because it is coming to the end of its life cycle,” said McFaddin.
EKU Board of Regents members at their April meeting gave the go ahead for a new capital preservation fee of $100 for Model to help keep up with maintenance needs. McFaddin says tuition will not change for the upcoming school year. But a charter approach is out for now. “Currently, as it’s configured there is no general fund bond support for a new school. There is currently no funding stream that would come from charter for facility replacement either. We will continue to work within the Donovan Annex complex into the 2018- 2019 academic year for Model,” explained McFaddin.
