Examination Of Charter Option for Model Expected to Continue in January

Stu Johnson

Preliminary work continues to convert Eastern Kentucky University’s Model Laboratory School into a charter school.  Come January a steering committee will tackle a number of key issues.

The steering committee, comprised of EKU and Model faculty and staff plus school parents, is charged with developing a strategic plan, implement a fundraising campaign, and drafting the charter application.  Committee Chair Betina Gardner says getting a charter in place by next fall may be too ambitious. “While we have a timeline and it could be that fall 18 something may happen.  It’s unlikely that we could get all of this together by that time,” said Gardner.

Gardner says it’s more likely any approved charter contract wouldn’t happen until the fall of 2019.

The EKU Board of Regents approved a resolution calling for protection of the current Model students living within the district.  A campus wide email sent last week indicated the impact for out of district students is still not clear.

All this activity stems from plans to build a new Model Lab facility.
