State Board of Education to Discuss Charter Schools

kentucky.com

Kentucky’s state board of education is expected to take a deeper look at charter schools during a special meeting in November.

The board decided Wednesday to conduct a more thorough review of the highly-debated educational option.

Richard Innes with the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy says statistical reviews show charter school programs can help reduce academic achievement gaps.

The staff education analyst has been studying Kentucky education reforms for years.  “It would be important if the board would approach the legislature and say ‘we’ve looked at our current chronic achievement gap situation and we now recognize that we need additional tools to deal with this,” explained Innes.

It would take enabling legislation to pave the way for charter schools in the Commonwealth.  Innes says there’s no reason to speculate about possible passage until after the November election. The Republican-led senate has previously passed charters, while the Democratic-run house has not.
