A large group of Madison County 8th graders have been schooled in adulthood budgetary decision making. Monday brought a dose of reality at the ‘Reality Store’ at Eastern Kentucky University.
The students are assigned a profession and then set about making decisions about everything from a car purchase to daycare to groceries, based on estimated earnings.
Madison Middle Schooler Hanna Bryant admits savings doesn’t always register as a top priority. “I feel like people spend a lot more on entertainment than they probably should, but I feel like happiness is really important as well. So, you have to have a balance between saving and between spending,” said Bryant.
8th grader Kirsee Rodgers admits she likes buying clothes and food, but adds for her mom, there are more important things ‘like bills.’
