Student Test Scores Show Progress

kentucky.com

Just-released testing data from the Kentucky Department of Education show gains in a number of areas.  The state’s chief education administrator admits progress doesn’t eliminate the need for future improvement.

High school graduation rates, along with college/career readiness continue to go up.  State officials say the number of schools and districts performing at the highest levels are up from last year.

But, State Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt says testing results don’t address future needs.  “I hate to be morbid, but this is really the autopsy of what happened last year.  What we’ve got to do start doing is looking what’s going into the system,” said Pruitt.  “What are we providing our students?”

Pruitt says achievement gaps remain a prominent concern.  This is the final year of Kentucky’s current assessment and accountability system.  Action by Congress paves the way for the Every Student Succeeds Act.
