A newly formed COVID-19 vaccine task force in Lexington met for the first time this week. The panel is charged with helping to streamline coronavirus vaccine distribution.
Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton says it’s important to put residents most vulnerable to complications from COVID-19 in the front of the vaccination line. She said one key step is managing logistical challenges and coordinating distribution. Chief of Staff in the mayor’s office Tyler Scott noted it’s too soon to pin down vaccination locations. “At some point we’ll get to a place where we have a larger vaccine site that’s managed by a Kroger and assisted by us and a number of other folks,” said Scott.
Even with the state’s guidance, Scott admits it’s an, quote, “incredible task to unpack” at the local level.
Chuck Mix, an expert in logistics, will serve as the project manager. Mayor Gorton said one of the important goals is to develop a plan for providing equitable access to the COVID vaccine.
Scott added hopefully there will be more certainty over time about the receiving of vaccine and distribution. Shots are being administered to those in nursing homes and front line caregivers now.?
