Kentucky Public Health Commissioner: COVID Deaths Much Higher than Flu

Kentucky’s mortality rate for those diagnosed with coronavirus is just over 1%.  Although, that may sound relatively low, It represents more than 2000 people across the Commonwealth.

Early on in the pandemic, comparisons were sometimes made with influenza.  And while Kentucky and all other states suffer losses to flu each year, State Public Health Commissioner Steven Stack said they are far fewer than COVID related deaths. “We have more deaths from COVID-19 in the first seven months of COVID than we did in the past seven years combined for influenza,” said Stack.

Flu vaccinations year to year vary and effectiveness can range from 40 to 60%. Stack said Kentucky’s loss of life due to coronavirus has been less than many other states.  He attributes that to the approach taken to restrictions and mask wearing in Kentucky.
